With one quick look at the Giro Prolight SLX Shoes, you'll know something is different. There are no mechanical closures, a rarity among pro-level shoes. This is in response to the needs of their marquee rider, Levi Leipheimer. Being meticulous about his gear, he wanted Velcro closures rather than a buckle so he could be confident that the shoes would survive a crash; buckles can break and having one go in a Grand Tour is a lousy way to lose a race you prepared all year for.Velcro, great. Simple, adjustable, conforms well to the foot, hard to break: everyone can get into that. But Giro didn't just drape three straps across the top of the shoe. They designed each strap to do something a bit different, so each is angled slightly differently. The top strap holds the heel into the cup, the middle strap goes across the metatarsals to anchor your foot in the shoe, and the bottom strap takes up any loose space in the forefoot. If you take a close look at the medial side of the shoe, you'll see that each strap is fixed on large swaths of material, meaning that you're pulling the entire upper over your foot, rather than creating pressure points under each strap. Another subtle but striking feature is the way the toe box is constructed. One-piece toes look great, but the smooth look often comes at the price of limited adjustability. On the Prolight, the toe area looks conventional, but it allows for a wide range of adjustment on that bottom strap and eliminates the dreaded pucker, even if you have a narrow forefoot.And, because every gram counts when you're climbing 15,000 feet a day, several days in a row, Leipheimer also wanted the lightest possible shoe without losing either stiffness or security. Footwear - like all other contact points in cycling - is largely a matter of personal preference and experience. I have a fairly average foot that is perhaps a tiny bit narrow and these shoes fit and feel great. As for the features, you've probably already read a lot about this shoe so this review will be limited. As advertised, this shoe is surprisingly light - even with the relatively heavy speedplay cleat and adapter - which is what makes me long for a SP specific sole. The velcro fasteners are also quite good. I was skeptical after using so many ratchet closures over the years, but the material is supple enough to micro adjust and they actually change the fit of the shoe. other shoes' velcro straps have left me wondering why they included them at all. The varying arch support is also a nice feature - even though cycling doesn't engage the foot in the same way as walking or running.
The sizing proved to be a little off for me. Interestingly, I recently also bought the Rapha Grand Tour shoe in 42.5, which seems to fit fine. The Giro's 42.5 - which uses the same sole - had my toes touching the ends of the shoe, so I went up to the 43's which ended up being a little large. Comfortable, but generous for only a half size difference. None of these things is enough of a problem to take away from a great and very lightweight shoe

I've been riding in these for a couple months now, they are extremely comfortable and light. I've banged them up but they still work really well. Also they clean super easy so you can keep them looking pretty and pearly white.

These shoes are the best cycling shoes I have ever owned! The only reason I give them 4 stars instead of 5 is because they are just a tad wide for my foot. I do have a narrow foot, though. They are by no means uncomfortable, I just wish they were a tad bit more snug. All-in-all a superb cycling shoe, though.
